Failed on emissions? Here is what that actually means
You're in the car park with a sheet of paper you weren't expecting and a word on it you've never used in your life. Lambda. Opacity. Smoke value. The tester was polite and quick, and you still have no idea whether this is a cheap morning or the end of the car.
In Great Britain an emissions fail is almost always graded major rather than dangerous, so if your old MOT certificate is still in date you can drive away and book the repair. What you shouldn't do is guess at the cause. The numbers that failed you are printed on the sheet in your hand, and petrol and diesel are measured on completely different ones.
Two scope notes first. This is the Great Britain answer: Northern Ireland tests through its own centres under its own rules. And "almost always" has exactly one exception, a diesel one.
Now the paper. Nearly everything you need to hold a repair quote to account is on it.
Start with the printout, not the internet
Where the numbers live on the refusal notice
The document that says you failed is a VT30, a refusal of an MOT test certificate. It lists the defects and their grades. It doesn't carry your readings.
Those print separately, straight off the gas analyser or the smoke meter, and that second sheet is the one worth having. The inspection manual settles who owns it: "If the vehicle fails the emissions test, a copy of the result print out must be given to the customer."
So ask at the counter, before you leave. Photograph both sheets. The result print carries the limit your car was tested to as well as what it actually did, and on a diesel that limit isn't a fixed number. That's where most of the confusion starts.
Petrol: the four readings that decide it
A petrol car has its exhaust sampled twice, at two engine speeds. The tester holds it at fast idle, 2,500 to 3,000rpm, and records carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and lambda. Then the engine drops back to a natural idle, 450 to 1,500rpm, for a second carbon monoxide reading.
Four readings. Four limits. All four have to be inside for a pass.
Lambda is the one that throws people, because it isn't a pollutant at all. It's a ratio. It describes whether the mixture going into the engine is right, where 1.00 is the ideal blend of air and fuel and the MOT allows a narrow band either side. That's why a car can fail on lambda while its gas figures look tidy.

These are the basic emissions test limits. A car that fails the basic test then goes to a full catalyst or a non-catalyst test with its own limits, and where the manufacturer published figures for that model the tester uses those instead of the defaults.
Diesel: the plate on your car beats the default limit
A diesel isn't judged on gases. It's judged on smoke, measured as opacity, and this is the part almost nobody explains properly.
Before the test the tester goes looking for a manufacturer's plate. It's usually in the engine bay, on the VIN plate or a sticker near it, often marked 24 R followed by a number. If your car carries one, that number is your limit. Not the default. The date-banded limits apply only where there's no plate value to find.

There's one small kindness in the rules. The tester adds 0.05 to the plate value before entering it in the meter, to allow for manufacturing tolerance, so a plate reading 0.10 is tested at 0.15. Some cars now come in with plate values as low as 0.01.
Where no plate value exists, the year the car was first used decides everything, and the schedule has tightened hard. A 2016 diesel is measured against 0.7. A turbocharged car from 2007 is measured against 3.0, more than four times looser, on the same test with the same meter.

The default applies only where the car carries no manufacturer's plate value. Where a plate value is shown, that is the limit, and the tester adds 0.05 to it before entering it to allow for manufacturing tolerance, so a plate reading 0.10 is tested at 0.15.
Major or dangerous, and why it changes your afternoon
What DVSA calls a dangerous emissions defect
Nearly every emissions defect in the manual is graded major, on both fuels. Major means the car has failed and needs the work. It does not by itself mean the car has a dangerous MOT defect, but the vehicle must still be roadworthy before it is driven.
One emissions defect is graded dangerous, and it's a diesel one: an exhaust that "emits excessive smoke or vapour of any colour to an extent likely to obscure the vision of other road users". That's a car making it harder for the driver behind to see, which is why it sits in a different class from a number a fraction over.

How often an emissions defect actually shows up
You'll see it repeated that emissions cause about 30% of MOT failures. The government's own figures say otherwise. DVSA's 2019 count, published in the Department for Transport's MOT consultation, puts every emissions failure together at 11.03% of all initial failures.
The current quarterly data uses a wider bucket. Noise, emissions and leaks combined ran at 3.15% of class 3 and 4 initial tests in 2024 to 2025, and that share peaks in the same quarter every year.

These are the share of MOT initial tests on class 3 and 4 vehicles in Great Britain that recorded at least one defect in DVSA's noise, emissions and leaks category. That category covers exhaust noise and fluid leaks as well as emissions, so it is a ceiling on the emissions share rather than the emissions share itself.
The 2019 breakdown is sharper, and it changes what to expect from a garage. Hydrocarbons accounted for 0.58% of initial failures, carbon monoxide 1.98%, diesel smoke 1.18%. Other emissions-related failures accounted for 7.29%, more than the three named readings put together. So most emissions-related failures in that breakdown sit in the residual "other" category. DfT warns that the percentages in its own table are more reliable than the raw counts behind them, so we've quoted the shares and left the totals alone.
Red flag: a quote for a new catalytic converter or DPF with no diagnosis attached. Ask which reading failed and what the tester's own sheet says. A part fitted to treat a symptom can fail again, and either can be an expensive mistake to make twice.
Red flag: an offer to remove, delete or bypass the DPF, EGR or AdBlue system so the car will pass. Say no, and get the offer in writing if you can. Visible emissions equipment fitted by the manufacturer that is missing, obviously modified or obviously defective is a major MOT defect. DPF removal also makes the car illegal for road use.
Red flag: pressure to authorise the repair on the spot because the retest window is closing. The refusal notice is yours and it travels. You can take it to any garage, and nothing in the retest rules makes you decide at the counter.
Petrol cars: what usually caused it
A lambda reading outside 0.97 to 1.03
A lambda sensor sits in the exhaust and tells the engine whether it's burning too much fuel or too little. Most cars have two, one before the catalytic converter and one after it, so the car can check its own catalyst as well as its mixture.
Here's the point that saves money. A lambda reading outside the band is a symptom, not a diagnosis. An air leak, an injector fault, incorrect fuel pressure and a catalytic converter past its best can all sit behind an out-of-range result. The printout does not identify which component caused it.
Fit a new sensor without finding out why the mixture was wrong and you've bought a part and kept the fault. That's how people pay twice.
High CO and high HC, the rich-running family
Carbon monoxide over the limit often points to rich running. Hydrocarbons over the limit mean unburnt fuel is reaching the exhaust. They can rise together, and the causes run from cheap to grim.
The cheap end is a blocked air filter, worn spark plugs or a misfire on one cylinder. The middle is fuelling: a leaking injector, a sensor feeding the engine bad information. The grim end is oil getting past worn rings or valve stem seals, which shows up as blue smoke and a high hydrocarbon reading.
If a garage says your engine is burning oil and wants to sort that before quoting a new catalytic converter, that isn't necessarily upselling. Burning oil can foul a catalyst. Fit a new one without fixing the cause and the replacement may be damaged too.
The engine management light is its own fail
On a petrol car first used on or after 1 July 2003, the tester turns on the ignition and watches the engine malfunction indicator lamp. What we all call the engine management light. It has to come on, and then it has to go out.
A lamp that stays on is a major defect on its own. So is a lamp that never lights at all, because a bulb removed to hide a fault is the oldest trick on the forecourt and the manual knows it. Your gas readings can be perfect and the car still fails on this one line.
It is also a fail you can see coming. If that light has been on for months and you've learned to ignore it, get the code read before the test, not after.
Diesel cars: smoke, filters and the fix that guarantees a fail
Visible smoke of any colour, if a filter is fitted
One extra rule catches modern diesels. Where a diesel particulate filter is fitted, the tester also checks that no visible smoke of any colour comes out during the metered check. Visible smoke there is a major defect by itself, whatever the opacity number was.
The test is harder on the car than people expect. The engine has to be at least 80°C, or its normal operating temperature if that's lower. The tester then runs it up to full fuel position, reads the meter, and repeats, up to six accelerations in total. The car passes if the first acceleration comes in at 60% or less of its limit, or if the mean of three readings lands at or under it.
So a cold arrival is not itself a valid reason for a fail. The official reading has to follow the manual's temperature procedure.
A blocked filter and the regeneration that never finished
The filter traps soot and clears it through regeneration. Some regeneration cycles need sustained exhaust heat, and repeated short trips can interrupt them before they finish.
A blocked filter and a faulty pressure sensor can both trigger warnings, but similar symptoms do not prove the same fault. Pay for the diagnosis first. A forced regeneration can sometimes be the repair.
EGR valves and AdBlue systems also form part of the emissions system. Ask which component has failed and what evidence supports the diagnosis before you agree to replacement.
Why removing the filter is the one repair that cannot work
Someone may offer to take the filter out instead of repairing it. That is not a lawful repair for road use. Here's what you'd actually be buying.
Department for Transport testing found that removing a DPF raises the number of particles coming out of the exhaust by roughly 10,000 times. Since February 2014 the MOT exhaust inspection has included a visual check that the filter is there. Evidence that the filter has been tampered with is a major defect in its own right, and a filter cut open and rewelded fails unless you can show there was a valid reason, such as having it cleaned.
So the car fails anyway, and using it on the road is a separate offence. Cleaning, forced regeneration and replacement are all legitimate. Removal is the one repair that ends in a fail.

Every figure below is a marketplace estimate rather than a quote for your car, and two UK platforms put the same catalytic converter job £199.20 apart. That gap is the clearest possible argument against treating any single quote as a benchmark.

The disagreement runs inside each platform too. ClickMechanic's own city averages for that job start at £380 in Manchester and reach £680 in Glasgow, and every one of the nine cities it lists sits above its own headline average. Read a national average as the shape of a price, never as the price.
And if the quote is a four-figure filter on a car worth less than that, the arithmetic has already answered you. It's a different decision, and there's a right way to go about it: what scrapping it properly involves.

Cheap things worth trying before you authorise a part
Start with evidence, because it is free. Ask for the emissions printout and any fault codes before authorising a part.
Then ask whether basic service items have been checked before a major part is authorised.
Skip the bottle-first diagnosis. Get the failed reading and the fault identified before spending money on an additive. We can tell you what the tester measured and what these jobs usually cost, but we haven't seen your car, and finding the fault is what a garage is for.

Before you agree to any work, ask these six things:
- Ask for the printed emissions result, not just the fail list, and check which limit the tester actually tested your car to.
- On a diesel, ask whether a plate value was used and what it was, because that number, not the default table, is what your car was judged against.
- Ask whether the test procedure reached the required engine temperature before the reading was taken.
- Ask what the diagnosis is, separately from what the part costs, and get both written down before you agree to anything.
- Ask whether the proposed part is the fault itself or a symptom of one, and what happens if the fault comes back afterwards.
- Ask what a retest costs at this garage, and whether a partial retest applies, before you let them start the work.
It does not make your car ULEZ non-compliant
Two different systems, and people mix them up constantly. Transport for London enforces the ULEZ on your vehicle's declared emissions, not on your MOT result and not on the car's age. Petrol cars need to meet Euro 4 for NOx. Diesels need Euro 6 for NOx and particulates.
So a car can fail its MOT on emissions this morning and remain fully ULEZ compliant. A compliant car can fail too. Your Euro standard may be printed on the V5C, and TfL's own vehicle checker will confirm it from the registration.
The cost of getting it wrong is £12.50 a day in the zone, and a penalty charge of £180 if you skip it, reduced to £90 if you pay within 14 days.
Northern Ireland handles diesel emissions differently
Northern Ireland runs MOT testing through DVA centres rather than private garages, under its own Construction and Use regulations, so the booking and the paperwork are different.
The DPF rule lands in the same place. A missing filter, where one was fitted when the vehicle was built, fails the test, and the Department for Infrastructure says plainly that removing one "will almost invariably" breach those regulations and make the vehicle illegal for road use.
Enforcement reaches past the test centre. Officers can run a roadside emission spot check, including a metered diesel smoke test, on a vehicle seen emitting avoidable smoke. A driver may be offered a £30 fixed penalty, or fined up to £1,000 in court. Where the vehicle is a danger to other road users, the fixed penalty is £60 and three points, or a court can impose up to £2,500 for a car. Further use is prohibited until the defect is fixed.
Northern Ireland suspended the diesel smoke test for cars and light goods vehicles in 2006. A 2024 consultation proposed particle-number testing for modern diesels first registered from 1 January 2013. Its outcome report said legislation had to change before the new test could begin, and in April 2025 DfI said the minister had instructed officials to prepare for its introduction.

Why did my car fail its MOT on emissions?
Because one measured reading went over its limit, or because the tester found another emissions-related defect. On DVSA's 2019 breakdown, the three named gas and smoke readings together accounted for under four percent of all initial failures, while the residual other-emissions category accounted for more than seven.
Can I drive it home after an emissions fail?
In Great Britain, usually yes. Almost every emissions defect is graded major rather than dangerous, and a major fail doesn't cancel an MOT certificate that's still in date. The exception is a diesel emitting so much smoke or vapour that it obscures other drivers' vision. That one is graded dangerous, and dangerous means the car stays where it is.
How much does it cost to fix an emissions failure?
Anything from about £110 for a lambda sensor to four figures for a new particulate filter. The honest answer is that nobody can price it before the fault is found. Two UK marketplaces publish different catalytic-converter averages, which is why diagnosis and a car-specific quote matter.
Will a car pass its MOT with the DPF removed?
No. The exhaust inspection has included a visual check for the filter since February 2014, and evidence that the filter has been tampered with is a major defect on its own. A filter cut open and rewelded fails unless there was a valid reason, such as cleaning. Using the car afterwards is a separate offence.
Do fuel additives get a car through the emissions retest?
No additive can replace a failed sensor, repair a damaged catalyst or restore missing emissions equipment. Get the failed reading diagnosed before spending money on one. The tester must follow the manual's temperature procedure when taking the official reading.
Will a retest cost the full MOT fee again?
Not necessarily. There are partial retest routes that cost nothing or up to half the full fee, depending on where the car goes and how quickly it comes back. Read those rules before you book the repair rather than after.
