🔵 BMW F11 520D Engine Warning Light Intermittently on 🔵 Vehicle on diagnostic computer, engine faults stored for exhaust back pressure sensor before turbo, signal open or short circuit and air mass system, measured too low. First we inspected the live data of the sensor reading which was plausible at present. Followed by a dynamic test on the diagnostics which also passed correctly. So where do we go from here? The clue is in the fault code stored, open or short circuit suggesting an internal fault with the sensor or break in the wiring. Next, whilst inspecting the live sensor reading again, we moved the sensor & wiring around (wiggle test) to find the reading would fluctuate from around 1000 mbar to a default 600 mbar when the system is faulting. This is not right suggesting a break in a wire somewhere. Moving the wiring loom we were able to locate the break where the sensor reading would fluctuate the most. A yellow wire inside the loom rubber insulation. To rectify the fault, we replaced the x3 wires & connectors between the sensor to the engine control unit. Carried out a wiggle test again which showed the sensor reading now stable at around 1000 mbar. All sorted 👊 To find a fault on any modern vehicle it’s important to ‘test, not guess’!
